Detroit 2020 City of Dreams

The City of Broken Dreams

Back in 1961 Detroit, Michigan came its closest ever to achieving the Olympic games, but lost it to Mexico City. After the loss in the summer of 1967 Detroit was spun into fury and chaos, the riots broke out and most of the city was left to decay, it cannot be proven but many believe the loss of the games began the process of decay that led to the riots, or at least contributed to the chaos. In 1950 Detroit was the richest city in the US. ; the fourth most populated as well. It is sad to state that Detroit has had the most unsuccessful biding of any city for the games. It is also sad to state that Detroit is the only modern city to ever lose 1 million residents, it would seem that the area is cursed with a bout of bad luck, Detroit is and has been the most dangerous city in the U.S. since the late 60's., it would seem that the City could be considered as the City of Broken Dreams.

Atlanta, GA. is probably the best example of how a city could prosper from the Olympic games, it was little more than the home of Coca-Cola, but was elevated to a global height in 1996 when it hosted the games. Perhaps the same could happen to the city of Detroit, MI. a city 2 times the size of Atlanta. It could also reverse the economic downturn due to the fact that 1 out of 10 people in the US are affiliated somehow to the automotive industry in Detroit, and enjoy employment because of it. That is an astounding 30 million workers. If the city turns around then perhaps the economy would as well. Detroit would benefit immensely if it would be allowed to host the Games.

Detroit has all the stadiums and facilities it needs to host the games, in the city and nearby, it would only have to construct a small stadium, and 3 smaller facilities. The city will have an adequate light rail and heavy rail system fully functioning in 2013 when the decision will be reach, in that time Detroit will be the focal point of the Movie industry and Green Technology. Detroit will Joint bid with Windsor, Ontario, Canada, giving it a better chance in the grand scheme. With the failure of the Chicago Bid it will give President Obama, Jennifer Grandholm, and Detroit Mayor Dave Bing ample time to develop a plan for the city, with Dave's partners in business, along with his skill as a successful businessman he along with the Governor and President will develop a plan to secure the bid .

Detroit is on the road to recovery, landing the Olympic Games will catapult the city out of the depths of years of fear and corruption into the light and finally will become the city it was meant to be, Detroit can only hope it;s dreams wont go unrealized and its needs unfulfilled. The city that moved the world, and back boned the principal of democracy, will rise out of the ashes, and must not only succeed it will succeed. Please comment, and express your thoughts, I understand that Detroit isn't the only city that deserves the Games and understand many people hate this city for no apparent reason, but perhaps its because the city has been shrouded by lies and corruption. Again please comment, I would like to know your thoughts on the matter.

Construction has been approved for a mega speed rail between Detroit and Chicago, it would only take 1 hr to reach the city so many people could stay in Chicago and still make their way to the D, it could benefit both cities.

First of all the 12th street riots happened in the summer of 1967. Second, one of the reasons the games were lost to Detroit was the riots. Third, the rail system is being slowed by politics and financial turmoil. Other than that, I agree with you. I was born in 1986. I love Detroit and I live in the Cass Corridor now. I want to see this city rebound in the next ten years, but we need to change a generation of ignorance.

True the riots did start in 1967 but the games were lost in Aug 7 years prior, as all games are awarded seven years before they are to be held, detroit would have to be ready in Aug of 2013 to recieve the hosting ability for the 2020 olympic games.

I agree at the pace we are at currently, truthfully im planning to borrow money from the government to start a theme park/ water park where the abandoned briggs district is located, although this is far off topic, many considerations must be looked into for detroit to ever host the games, one of the worst problems is the inabillity and unwillingness to cooperate between the suburbs and the city due to stupid pathetic racism, i live in the suburbs and cant wait till i get enough money to move downtown.

I love the olympics, but Detroit more. I live in the suburbs but I always say Detroit is my home. Getting the 2020 olympics would be the best thing ever to happen to this city.

My question is what facilites whould the need to build?

Well we have many facilities ready to host the game, the only things we would have to build would be an Olympic swimming and aquatic center which can be used by the public, an Olympic track stadium, Wayne state's track could be converted, or theoretically any track in the area could be used, we would need an Olympic tennis court, and an Olympic stadium, which would be temporary, and could be torn down, unless we decided to host say a soccer team in Detroit, we can no longer joint bid with Windsor, due to the IOC's ruling, I also would love to build a theme park in Briggs, and turn Michigan Central Terminal into a Luxury hotel and station for the theme park which could be built across I-75 and a Indoor water park which is connected to Motor City Casino through tunnels, and to the hotel via sky walk. We already have many useful facilities, currently to build stadiums for the games would cost less than 700 million. We also must clean up the city 100 million+, and we are installing, a light rail system down Woodward ave, and a high speed rail from Ann arbor to the airport and then to Detroit, that is beginning soon and will be ready for the games, we also if we loose in 2020 will try to bid every time afterward until we get the games.

Would Detroit have the money to host and build the facilities?

With all the vacant land in Detroit it should be no problem finding the room to build

Maybe in 2040 or never come, Due Many of Reasons Since First Detroit Black Mayor Mess up city, Got Detroit Riots in 1966 and 1967 43 killed and 467 Injured and 7,200 Arrests and over 2,000 Building burned down and In 2007 Detroit becomes #1 Detroit Dangerous city with murders and high crimes then Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick Mess up again and FBI is on case with him also He still owes city detroit.. if we Find good Mayor that will raise triple propery taxes to get rid low income and cleaning up city build new homes for wealthy Like Chicago did..If Olympic comes to detroit 2020, (I belive not..) so City can Afford to get Olympic games Here if get bid over $150 Million. Chicago Failed outbid $80 Million to Germany and France Winter Games that will host in 2018 final Deicde in 2011 to which German or France. Detroit have lonnnnnng way to clean up and make bring more wealthy people in Detroit.

Detroit doesn't have enough money to host currently, but through private funding such as Faygo, Cintron, Better Made, Compuware, Comerica Bank, Walside Windows, Target, Meijer, and many many others Detroit would only have to raise roughly 30 million dollars, chump change compared to 80+ million to bid, when we win, perhaps not until the distant future Detroit will recieve federal money to host the games, roughly around 3/4 the cost, Detroit by 2014 will be making substantial amounts of money from the public transit lines being constructed, as well as the new ties to the movie industry, and the green technology industry, also, business as far west as st. Louis and as far east as New York support Detroit's bid for future Olympic Games, for more on this head over to www.detroit2020olympics.weebly.com , or check the fan pages on Facebook

To be honest, there is no city bidding for the 2020 games that have more facilities for the games in N. America than Detroit. All we need is the Olympic stadium, an Aquatic center, and maybe a arena or two. We have plenty of facilities and room in the city. Although we only have three years to be ready, and the economy isn't great, crime is actually going down believe it or not. It will be very difficult, but it is not totaly impossible. I do believe Detroit can be the U.S. representative.

The IOC the people who decide which city hosts the games says it doesn't want an american city to host the game for a long time if they had it there way the US would never host it again

M.D. Pachla 15 months ago

Don't tell me it couldn't happen. Set big goals and live big dreams. Why is it wrong to aspire to greatness? To avoid the disappointment of a failed Olympics bid? C'mon. Detroit is plenty tough enough to endure that. We have a lot going for us and people can be swayed by the emotion of rebirth. "From the ashes, it will rise." Detroit is rising again. Every day, it's becoming easier to see. And talk about civic pride. The international angle with Windsor is the real difference maker. Remember, we already run an international marathon.
